Let’s Move Essex project

Versus Arthritis is working in partnership with Active Essex to develop opportunities for people with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions to be active.

We will be recruiting and training 8 instructors who will be providing free classes for 12 weeks from January 2023. The classes will be a combination of face to face and virtual classes for people in the Basildon and Braintree areas. Virtual classes will also be open to people living outside of Basildon and Braintree depending on capacity/numbers. Building upon the learning from a similar project delivered in London, the project will help:

  • support people with arthritis (PwA) and musculoskeletal conditions to enjoy better health and wellbeing because they are active.
  • upskill community-based fitness instructors to support PwA into physical activity.
  • get inactive PwA active and well after lockdown by addressing the barriers they face to physical activity, including lack of confidence, information, and opportunities to be active.

Rationale

We know that among fitness professionals there is a need for greater understanding of musculoskeletal conditions and how to support people with arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions to be active. We will therefore be recruiting fitness instructors and providing them with training on the condition, how to support people with arthritis and behaviour change to enable them to deliver online and community-based classes. Fitness mentors can provide a great support to the fitness professional team, including sharing their knowledge of supporting people with musculoskeletal conditions, sharing resources, and listening to their questions or concerns.

How you can help

We are looking for Fitness mentors to support our Let’s Move Essex fitness professionals delivering face to face and virtual sessions to people with arthritis and MSK conditions.
