Anterior longitudinal scan of the hip

Watch the video

The patient lies supine, lower limbs in neutral position and hip externally rotated 15–20°. The transducer is placed in a sagittal plane over the hip joint space. The transducer is moved to identify femoral head in acetabulum with overlying iliofemoral ligament. Now the skin, subcutaneous fat and thigh musculature is examined.

The probe is now moved inferiorly in order to examine the iliofemoral ligament as it passes over the anterior aspect of the femoral head and neck.
