Anterior transverse scan of the elbow
Watch the video
The patient sits, elbow extended, forearm supinated and supported. The probe is placed transversely over the anterior elbow. The convex humeral cortex is identified and the probe is moved inferiorly until cartilage is seen over the trochlea and capitulum of the elbow joint. Skin, subcutaneous fat, brachial artery, forearm musculature and trochlea are clearly visualised.
As the probe is moved medially the brachial artery can be seen pulsating.
The probe is now moved laterally, outlining the trochlea and capitulum. Skin, brachialis on the left, and brachoradialis on the right, and capitulum of the humerus are visualised.
