Suprapatellar transverse scan in neutral position

The patient lies supine, knee flexed at 15°. The transducer is placed transversely over the superior pole of the patella and will be moved proximally to assess the suprapatellar pouch.

Initially the outline of the patella is observed and, as the probe moves proximally, the suprapatellar pouch is visualised. Skin, subcutaneous fat, quadriceps tendon in cross-section, associated prefemoral fat pads and femur are visualised. The transducer is now moved medially and laterally.
