Response to Government's PIP policy
27 June 2025
The UK Government is finally starting to listen to calls from Versus Arthritis and the wider community on their devastating cuts to disability benefits. People currently relying on PIP will have their support protected but from November 2026, people applying for PIP will face new rules.
While this will be a huge relief for many in our community who rely on PIP to cover life's essentials, we don't think the Government's concessions go far enough. We remain deeply concerned about the potentially devastating impact these proposals will still have on people with arthritis.
That's why we will continue to call on MPs to vote against planned changes next week and protect people with arthritis now, and in the future. #CutToTheBone
Deborah Alsina, chief executive of Versus Arthritis:
“While we are relieved the UK Government has begun to listen, we remain deeply concerned about the potentially devastating impact these proposals will have on disabled people including those living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions in the future.
“People with arthritis should not be caught in political crossfire or be used to balance the books. The Government’s amendments are a step in the right direction but do not address the needs of people living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions in the future.
“We urge government to stand by their word to co-produce changes with disabled people so that the real-world implications on those living with fluctuating conditions such as arthritis are fully understood and considered.”
